Proving that bald is beautiful

10 Apr

If you’ve ever been to HDYR? 2nd Street District, you’ve probably noticed our very charismatic store lead, Michelle. Michelle lives, eats, breathes and probably even sleeps the How Do You Roll? core values (betterment, coachability, integrity, work ethic, and emotional competence). We all do, it’s part of our culture. BUT what you might not know is that Michelle has really gone above and beyond with her commitment to betterment.

making the world better

Two weeks ago we posted about partnering with Michelle in her efforts to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and to bring awareness to childhood cancer. On April 4, she and two other HDYR? 2nd Street District staff members shaved their heads at an official St. Baldrick’s event to show their support for those currently fighting cancer. Yes, you read that right. Michelle has been so inspiring that Jason and Kaden felt compelled to join the cause.

On the date of the event, several team members came to show their support!

Finally, came Michelle’s turn. She was very excited to find out that her hair was long enough to be donated!

Michelle has now shed her locks two times in two years to bring awareness to childhood cancer.  She is passionate about the effort to cure cancer as she knows many people who have been directly or indirectly affected by the disease. One of her close friends is currently fighting cancer and Michelle feels strongly about supporting her friend through the battle.

If you find yourself at How Do You Roll? 2nd Street, feel free to talk with any of our three shavees about the experience and what it means to them. We’re all moved by our team’s pursuit for betterment.

Our stellar customers at the HDYR? 2nd Street District contributed $65 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation! Talk about betterment being contagious.

In the spirit of giving and in sticking to our commitment of making the world better, How Do You Roll? donated $500 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation through Michelle’s fundraising efforts.

Making the world better. What does that mean to you?

Looking for a way to give back?

HDYR? 2nd Street is collecting donations for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. On April 4, our store lead, Michelle, will take betterment to another level as she sheds her lock in support of those battling cancer. This is the second time Michelle will have lost her locks to support loved ones.

How Do You Roll? is excited to support Michelle  and the foundation.  Michelle has joined the SHI/NetApp team for their event on April 4 at B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub in Austin. We’ll be posting more after the event, so stay tuned!

The Fast-Casual Sushi Fix in Texas

1 Aug

There are 8 fewer places to get your sushi fix in Texas as Sushi Zushi has closed down pending immigration investigations.

Though you might be crying a bit on the inside, fret not! Think of this as an opportunity to try new sushi flavors and tastes. How Do You Roll? custom sushi shops are just around the corner from three Sushi Zushi locations.

Maybe your go-to spot was at 5th and MoPac in Austin—check out our 2nd and San Antonio location. If you were a bit more north at the Sushi Zushi in the Domain, our flagship store is right across Braker in the Arbor Walk Shopping Center. And if you’re in Sushi Zushi’s hometown of San Antonio, we have a location right up the road in Stone Oak at Hardy Oak.

Sushi That Won’t Make You Seriously Sick

20 Jun

We recently read a local news piece about a Father’s Day celebration gone wrong– the Pham family found worms in the salmon they were using to make sushi.  While we’re not taking a position on who was right or wrong in the incident, we think it stinks that the celebration ended up with people praying to the porcelain-god.

Pham family, to make up for your not-so-happy Father’s Day fiasco, please have a sushi roll on us! We know that you’re probably associating sushi with images too-graphic-to-mention, but  sushi, prepared the right way, is still one of the best food choices you can make. Shoot an e-mail to Brittany (brittany@howdoyouroll.com) for more details!

While the Pham family incident seems to be isolated, all too often we hear stories of sushi gone-wrong. We’ll be the first to admit that eating raw or undercooked foods does increase your chances for foodborne illnesses (okay, so maybe we aren’t the first and technically the FDA requires us to say that, but we do acknowledge the risk).

When it comes to eating raw fish, the FDA says that “some species of fish can contain parasites, and freezing will kill any parasites that may be present.”

If you’re making sushi at home,  choose fish that’s meant to be eaten raw or “sushi quality.” If making your own sushi is making you a bit queasy after all you’ve heard, head to an established restaurant, like hdyr?

In corporate speak, we can assure you that all fish at hdyr? has been produced in a facility under a competent HACCP and Sanitary program in accordance with the US FDA’s seafood HACCP regulation 21 CFR 123. It should be noted that our frozen seafood is stored at -4 degrees Fahrenheit or lower, for more than 7 days before being distributed to hdyr? locations.

There are tons of perks to eating raw foods and sushi, so don’t let the sometimes-negative-attention scare you. Many fish are high in protein and low in calories, not to mention full of omega-3 fatty acids (sounds like the perfect food for rockin’ that bikini all summer… just sayin’).

If you’ve got a beef with any of our products, we’d love to talk to you! (We don’t recommend talking to the actual products about it, they’re sensitive to criticism). Shoot us an e-mail at info@howdoyouroll.com or connect with us on Facebook or Twitter.

Free Sushi for a Year? That’s How We Roll!

9 Apr

As a part of the three-day, corporate-owned How Do You Roll? Re-Grand Opening celebrations, we promised one lucky, loyal roller free sushi rolls for a year! Hundreds of you went to our locations in the Triangle, 2nd Street District and Arbor Walk Shopping Center to take advantage of $3.33 rolls and swipe your High Roller card for a chance to win.

After collecting all of the entries, we randomly selected our winner: Matt!

Matt is all about creating his own roll, and from the picture he sent us (see right) we think he’s fairly creative.

“I always make my own roll: Soy wrap, brown rice, sprouts and double cucumber, escolar, with crab mix on the inside, and Japanese mayo on top. The cucumber keeps the roll solid so it can still be cut with the crab mix inside instead of on top. Try it, I think you’ll be very happy,” he wrote to us. “Only 389 calories and 18g of protein!”

After looking up Matt in our loyalty system, we discovered that he’s a true hdyr? fanatic and went each day to celebrate the three different re-grand openings.

“As a coach I train people in enjoying their life, business, relationship, whatever and have them create an environment that supports that. I love that HDYR creates an environment for its employees and customers that has them enjoy walking in the doors.”

Congrats Matt and we hope you enjoy all of that sushi!

Thanks to Matt and all of you who made our celebrations such a success! We love that you love us!
