Rock On, Rockin’ Roller!

Shoot for the moon; even if you miss you’ll land among the stars.

We’ve all heard that before, whether it was our parents, teachers or friends encouraging us to be the best we can be. But what happens when you reach the top? At HDYR?, the answer to that is simple. We reward you!

Many have shown that they are dedicated sushi eaters, but one has out-shined the rest. He’s eaten more HDYR? than anyone and he’s not stopping anytime soon. He’s the rock star of sushi.

We’re talking about Scott Reep, of San Antonio. Scott is the first HDYR? fan to reach the coveted status of Rockin’ Roller in our loyalty program. Being the first to the top is no simple feat. It takes a lot of dedication, and a lot of sushi.

Scott’s wife first introduced him to the Stone Oak HDYR?, and it’s the service that keeps him coming back. Of course, the food, relaxed atmosphere and price point are enticing, but the superstar staff and leadership truly have an impact on his experience at HDYR?

So, what does the rock star eat?

“Personally, I like a spicy tuna roll on traditional paper with white rice, adding avocado, asparagus and green onion. Also added to the roll are generous amounts of chili powder, a decent amount of chili oil, and then topped with the spicy orange mayonnaise,” Scott told to us.

Although Scott has his favorite roll, he’ll often order two and switch up the ingredients on the second roll. As for sides, he says he usually orders calamari salad and puts ponzu sauce on top.

As the owner of a small business, Scott sincerely enjoys being able to support his local HDYR? and is excited to be the first Rockin’ Roller. We’re pretty stoked too!

Stars Shine Brightly at Stone Oak

Last month, HDYR? Stone Oak in San Antonio helped several of its customers get their “big break.”

In coordination with the PM Group, HDYR? set out to shoot its first commercial and wanted real customers to star in the spot. The Stone Oak restaurant was completely transformed as the camera crew took over the location.

Rollers of all ages came to the shoot, ready for their close up.

Happy New Year!

With the beginning of 2012, all of us at HDYR? are eager to get down to business and continue to build on the momentum of 2011. It seems like ages ago that many of our locations opened, but last year we in fact (more than) doubled when we opened our fourth Austin HDYR? and expanded to San Antonio, Houston, and College Station.

We’re thrilled to continue our sushi revolution by opening franchises nation-wide during 2012. I’m sure by now you’ve heard all the buzz on our newest locations, but I’d love to share with you the most recent updates.

Okay, that might be a bit of a dramatization, but we are serious about the California Dreamin’… being around for only a limited time.

After spending a day talking to you guys, we’ve found out that there are some uncertainties surrounding our “California Dreamin’…” Contest. Here are the answers to some of the most asked questions…

1. It’s freezing outside and you really want me to wear my swimsuit?

Though people typically wear swimsuits to the beach, we aren’t expecting you to wear yours to our restaurants! Here are some ideas we came up with while creating the contest:

- Wearing floaties over your business suit

- Wearing snorkeling gear while also wearing your heaviest winter coat

- Wearing your scuba suit (I’ve heard those are warm)

2. How much creativity are you looking for?

We’re not judging the contest, so as long as you get the most “likes” on Facebook, we can’t tell you how creative you should be. Though you might be able to get your friends to “like” your photo with minimal effort, we’re betting that other HDYR? fans will be more likely to “like” the photo if it gives them a chuckle. But hey, if you have 5,000 friends, that might be enough to win.

3. How do I get the most “likes” on Facebook?

Anyone can like the photo once it’s posted the HDYR? Facebook page. You can also share the photo with your friends via the “share” button.

After clicking share, it’ll give you options to post on your own wall, a friends wall, and a group or send it in a private message. Very important tip and it has to do with the way Facebook is set up- you should direct your friends to click on the photo so it links to our HDYR? page and then they can like the photo. If they click “like” on the shared post, it does not translate to a “like” on our page.

4. How do I post the photo on the HDYR? Facebook?

The answer to this really depends on what device you’re using. Most camera phones can upload pictures to our page, but it’ll depend on what type of phone you have and your data service.

From a computer, go to our wall and next to “share,” click photo. Then follow Facebook’s directions from there.

5. I have a long time to enter, right?

We know that January 31^st at 11:59 p.m. seems like it’s a lifetime away, but we purposely gave you a while to enter so that you had time to campaign for the most “likes.”

Remember, every entry receives a free roll!

We’re “California Dreamin’…” at the DKR Stadium!

Want to enter our “California Dreamin’…” contest but are unsure how? Well, you’re in luck! We’ll be at the HDYR? inside the Red McCombs End Zone in the Darrell K. Royal Stadium on the UT campus from 11 am to 2 pm tomorrow, December 6. While we encourage you to bring your own beach gear and camera, we’ll have some props and technology to help you upload your photo. Once you upload it to our Facebook, you’ll still have to get the most people to “like” it.

AND, it gets better. We’ll also have our prize wheel and some awesome swag! We’re still offering our “California Dreamin’…” special, so you can pick up a Cali roll and miso soup for $5 while you’re hanging out with us. Texas students, if you need a break from studying for finals or you’re just avoiding studying, head to the north end zone for some great food, fun and free stuff.

Come in. Warm up. Roll out.

HDYR? volunteers at the Austin Children’s Museum!

Wednesday, our talented team from the corporate office volunteered at the Austin Children’s Museum. If you haven’t been to the ACM, you absolutely should check out what they do. They have a really neat place and a great mission.

We’ve partnered with the ACM in the past, but were more than excited to put some muscle behind cutting gingerbread and assembling milk cartons for the museum’s first weekend of Gingerbread House Workshops.

Not only was it great to be able to get our hands dirty, but we practiced our teamwork skills in order to complete our tasks.

After leaving the ACM, we came back to the office in high spirits, discussing which volunteer opportunities we should tackle next…

HDYR? wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving

I’d like to take this time to point out the obvious- tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Aside from chowing down on a ridiculous amount of holiday food and watching football, tomorrow is for reflecting on all that we have in our lives and are grateful for. Everyone at How Do You Roll? has spent the past month discussing what we are thankful for- wonderful families, terrific friends, and beyond amazing coworkers. Not to mention, we are thankful for you, our loyal sushitarians. We’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again for everyone… We love that you love us!

Though our stores won’t be open on Thanksgiving, I wanted to share with you an exciting new way to serve your Thanksgiving feast. Drum roll please!

Thanksgiving sushi!

If you’re tired of seeing the same spread on your table at every holiday, why not jazz up your food (or use your leftovers) and make your own Thanksgiving sushi? I’ve found a few recipes online, and this one seems the most user-friendly. If you try this, let me know how it goes! If you want more creative ideas, this blog had a few different ingredient options.
