Proving that bald is beautiful

10 Apr

If you’ve ever been to HDYR? 2nd Street District, you’ve probably noticed our very charismatic store lead, Michelle. Michelle lives, eats, breathes and probably even sleeps the How Do You Roll? core values (betterment, coachability, integrity, work ethic, and emotional competence). We all do, it’s part of our culture. BUT what you might not know is that Michelle has really gone above and beyond with her commitment to betterment.

making the world better

Two weeks ago we posted about partnering with Michelle in her efforts to raise money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation and to bring awareness to childhood cancer. On April 4, she and two other HDYR? 2nd Street District staff members shaved their heads at an official St. Baldrick’s event to show their support for those currently fighting cancer. Yes, you read that right. Michelle has been so inspiring that Jason and Kaden felt compelled to join the cause.

On the date of the event, several team members came to show their support!

Finally, came Michelle’s turn. She was very excited to find out that her hair was long enough to be donated!

Michelle has now shed her locks two times in two years to bring awareness to childhood cancer.  She is passionate about the effort to cure cancer as she knows many people who have been directly or indirectly affected by the disease. One of her close friends is currently fighting cancer and Michelle feels strongly about supporting her friend through the battle.

If you find yourself at How Do You Roll? 2nd Street, feel free to talk with any of our three shavees about the experience and what it means to them. We’re all moved by our team’s pursuit for betterment.

Our stellar customers at the HDYR? 2nd Street District contributed $65 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation! Talk about betterment being contagious.

In the spirit of giving and in sticking to our commitment of making the world better, How Do You Roll? donated $500 to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation through Michelle’s fundraising efforts.

Making the world better. What does that mean to you?

Looking for a way to give back?

HDYR? 2nd Street is collecting donations for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. On April 4, our store lead, Michelle, will take betterment to another level as she sheds her lock in support of those battling cancer. This is the second time Michelle will have lost her locks to support loved ones.

How Do You Roll? is excited to support Michelle  and the foundation.  Michelle has joined the SHI/NetApp team for their event on April 4 at B.D. Riley’s Irish Pub in Austin. We’ll be posting more after the event, so stay tuned!

In the Shark Tank

22 Mar

The 5 weeks since we aired on Shark Tank have flown by, and we’re still getting questions from rollers that want to know what the experience was like. Peter and Yuen have been pretty busy but we had a chance to sit down and talk with them about their week in LA. Let’s walk through the steps.

“The process was very organized and secretive which was fun to watch and be a part of.  The producers did a great job of preparing us and making us practice our pitch as well as trying to anticipate what questions might come at us from the Sharks. They lined up all the businesses in rooms but the labels on the rooms were not the real company names to avoid spoilers.  Doing hair and makeup was quite the experience. They have magical ways of making you look less bald and less oily on screen.”

Yuen then went on tell us about the day of the shoot.

“We got to the studio at 6 a.m. and we didn’t film until 11 a.m.  The rest of the time we spent practicing our pitch and waiting nervously.  We started preparing our table, the sushi rolls, and set around 10 a.m. and before we knew it, we were walking down the Shark Tank hallway.  It’s a totally definitely experience when there is no music playing. It’s definitely more dramatic on TV.”

Yuen recalled waiting in the back room with a bit of a cold sweat.

“It happened in stages so it’s all very surreal.  We spent 15 minutes in the waiting room before going on stage. The part that was most nerve-wracking. The room was dark and we just sat and waited. Once we got in we presented for a little over an hour.”

We can’t recount the whole hour but Yuen said the funniest moment of the presentation was, “when Barbara said that our presentation was “too buttoned up” I actually unbuttoned by jacket and said “Oh you should have told me earlier!”.”

The guys left us with a bit of advice for anyone else thinking of making an appearance on the show.

“You better know your pitch, your numbers, and every little detail about your business. They can be very unforgiving if you don’t know your business. Also, be realistic about your business, it seems like a lot of people go in there and just overrate and overvalue their business.”

We want to wish your friends a happy birthday!

8 Mar

Hey there Rollers,

The How Do You Roll? Facebook page is now your new stage to wish all your friends and family a happy birthday.

That’s right. Know somebody special that needs a bit of extra attention on their big day? Just fill out the survey here.

Be sure to include:

-A photo of the birthday guy/gal/pet… the goofier the photo the better, but keep it rated pg please!

-One sentence describing the person and how they roll. This is your chance to show off your friends and family to the world! Tell us just a little bit about them so we know if they’re worthy of our Facebook endorsement. While we’d love to wish everyone a happy birthday, we simply don’t have the time or space, so this is how we’ll be making our decisions.

-The date of their birthday. Well this one should be obvious. We don’t wanna wish any belated birthdays, that’s for sure. Please give us at least a week prior to process!

And that’s it. So go forth rollers, seek out the people in your life deserving of a mass broadcasted happy birthday wish, and make sure they know when your birthday is too!

Over and out.

How to Survive a Shark Attack

14 Feb

Hey all! So for those of you who’ve been (totally) out of the loop as of late, this Friday our fearless leaders Peter and Yuen will be taking their talents to primetime TV to represent How Do You Roll? on ABC’s Shark Tank! We’re all pretty stoked here at the office to show off HDYR? to the whole nation, and we hope you’ll tune in at 9PM EST/ 8PM CST to see how we do. That all being said, we’ve heard these sharks can be a bit feisty, and the last thing we want to do it see our CEO get eaten alive on national TV. For this reason we’ve prepared a little “How to Survive a Shark Attack” guide for good measure. Enjoy!

1)      Don’t Play Dead

This is the number one shark attack rule out there. For some reason many people have the strange idea that if you don’t move, the sharks will just pass you by. False! Sharks have a keen sense of smell, and if they get even a whiff of fear, you’re toast. So whatever you do out there Peter and Yuen, make sure to stay sprightly!

2)      Keep Your Eye on the Shark

Sharks like to attack when you’re least expecting it. Just because they don’t look like they’re about to bite, doesn’t mean they aren’t thinking about it. You never know when Kevin is gonna rip your idea apart or when Mark’s gonna give your business a hugely undervalued offer. Keep your wits about you guys!

3)      Be a Shark Expert

Some sharks are way more likely to attack. The best strategy out there is to be familiar with the different kinds of sharks out there, where they tend to hunt, and for our purposes—what their favorite fish is. Did you know, for example, Mark Cuban is an entertainment buff who’s part owner of the Landmark Theatre chain? Or did you know that Barbara held 20 jobs by the time she was 23? This is the kind of knowledge that comes through in the clutch when the jaws start snapping in the tank. Right?

4)      Fight Back

Once a Shark makes up its mind, there’s nothing you can do about it but fight back! There’s no out-swimming a great white. Everything we’ve read says to try hit the shark in its two most vulnerable spots: the eyes and the gills. But we think these sharks might feel a bit more pain in their wallets…

5)      Make a Distraction

How do you stop a shark from eating you alive? Give it something else to nibble on. Why not some delicious sushi for example? We can’t say too much about it, but I’d expect a few of the sharks to be pretty satisfied with their custom rolls. We hope it works, it’d be a real shame if Peter and Yuen didn’t make it back to the office on Monday.

That’s all for now! Wish us luck and make sure to tune in on Friday night at 9PM EST on ABC!
