International Sushi Day – 6/18/2013

12 Jun

June 18 is International Sushi Day! Why? Because we say it is… so deal with it! (and come eat lots of sushi with us.) Our participating locations will have $5 rolls all day long. If there’s a better way to celebrate such an important holiday, we aren’t aware of it.

For those of you who think we just made this holiday up to show our love for sushi (and give our loyal customers an amazing deal), it does actually have some history, although it isn’t much different from the explanation we gave you in the previous paragraph (see: “because we say it is”):
Back in 2009, the administrator of the “Sushi” Facebook page decided that June 18 would be the first International Sushi Day. The idea was taken and ran with by his over 1 million followers, and quickly became a social media hit.

How Do You Roll? is proud to carry on the tradition of this nontraditional holiday this year, and for years to come. So on Tuesday June 18, come join the sushi (and awesome holiday) revolution, and have as many $5 rolls as you can handle…and then maybe have just one more for good luck, after all International Sushi Day is but once a year, make it count!

The fine print: Only at participating locations. Dine in only. Cannot be combined with other offers. Offer not valid online. Offer valid for Featured Rolls and Custom (1 protein, 3 veggies, 1 topping).

Have you made the switch to brown rice?

8 Nov

Hi everyone,

Jeff here. So I’m a bit of a sushi purist. When I order at HDYR? I’ve always stuck with the traditional wrap and white rice. Nothing against those of you willing to step outside of the conventional sushi parameters—I could just never bring my self to put brown rice in my sushi. It just didn’t seem right. That was until last week however, when a good friend (who may or may not be named Google) informed me that brown rice is actually better for you than white rice. Not only did this prompt me to order it on my next HDYR? trip, but it also gave me a great new idea for a blog topic: the one you’re reading right now. Thoughts so far? Get to the point? You bet.

First of all, brown rice is unrefined, meaning that only the hull of the grain is removed, and this makes it a whole grain. I’ve never been too particular about what exactly whole grains are, but I know they’re good for you. In fact, it’s been shown that people who include whole grains (like ahem, brown rice) in their diet are likely to maintain a healthy body weight. This could be because they’re full of fiber, an agent that makes you feel full longer and prevents you from, to put it bluntly, stuffing your stomach full of way too much food.

Also, researchers at Harvard have found that just two servings of brown rice per week can significantly lessen your chances of developing diabetes. AND it can also strengthen your bones. That’s right. Brown rice is chock full of magnesium—a bone building element critical to your everyday health. Just one cup of brown rice has 21 percent of daily-recommended value of magnesium. So finish off your sushi lunch with a glass of milk and your bones will surely thank you—though probably wait a while in between. The combo might taste a little…funny.

These are only a few of the great health benefits I found about my new favorite sushi-filler. Interested in learning more? Check out my sources at:

Tuna: The Fish You Can’t Afford Not to Eat

1 Nov

So I was browsing the net recently, consciously neglecting all the more productive things I probably should have been doing instead (homework, cleaning my apartment, responding to my grandmother’s recent emails, etc.) when I came across this great article on Time.com:

The Danger of Not Eating Tuna

Now, the article was published some time ago, 2008 to be exact, amid a minor mercury scare in some New York restaurants. I say minor because, well, it’s four years later and we don’t have any days off to observe the great New York mercury poisoning of ’08. Which, I’ve noticed is the case with most of these kind of things. Go figure. Anyway the article had some awesome info about the benefits of eating fish (you know, the stuff that’s in sushi) and tuna in particular.

Here are some of the highlights for those of you who don’t have an immense desire to read through a three page Time magazine article from four years ago—meaning most everybody. The article was primarily composed of an interview with Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, assistant professor of medicine and epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health. Probably a guy that knows what he’s talking about.

The doctor recommends eating fish two to three times a week. Doing so greatly lowers the likeliness of getting heart disease—the number one killer of adults in the US.  In fact it reduces the risk by one third. I like those odds, thanks Omega-3s!

According to Dr. Dariush only 10-20% of the US population eats sufficient fish. Scares warning people from eating fish actually end up being more harmful and helpful, because the amount of (for example) mercury contained is actually negligible when compared to how beneficial tuna is for you. Mercury weaken one’s heart, but Omega 3’s make it a whole lot stronger. And there’s a considerable amount more of the latter in Tuna.

So there you have it. The Danger of Not Eating Tuna. Or should we say: The Danger of Not Going to How Do You Roll?

$5 Sure Goes A Long Way

17 Oct

So we’re sure you’ve heard by now (and if you haven’t- well, we don’t know where you’ve been) that our California Dreamin’ deal is back and better than ever. For the full month of October get a California roll and a miso soup for just five bucks!

To celebrate the return of this awesome deal, and to put us all in the mood to save some cash, we’d like to present five OTHER cool things you can do for (about) five bucks.

1)    See a Movie at the Dive-in

That’s right. Drive in movie theaters are, unfortunately, a dying breed. But the one’s that are still standing usually cost no more than five bucks per car. So grab some pals and catch a flick under the stars. It’s an experience not to be missed.

2)    Go eBay Surfing

Type anything into the eBay search bar, and set the price cap at five bucks. Now see what great junk you can find. This might set you back a couple extra dollars including shipping, but it’s the hunt that’s the fun part. Have a competition with some friends and see who can get the coolest thing for five bucks!

3)    Play Charity Roulette

So this is a game we just made up, but can’t wait to try it. Head over to charitynavigator.org and find a charity you’ve never heard of but like the cause. Then, send ‘em five bucks. It’ll be your good deed for the day. That and leaving a tip for our friendly rollers at HDYR?, of course.

4)  Have a Five Dollar Potluck

Invite all your friends and family over for a potluck dinner, but make sure to tell them they can’t spend more than five dollars. See what kind of goofy creations they come up with. Better yet, see if they bring enough food to feed everyone. If not, you can always make a quick run to your local HDYR? Just kidding, but, really.

5) Send Someone a Package

Remember being at summer camp and getting a brown box care package from you parents? Is there anything that compares to that feeling? We think not. So pick someone random. Scroll through your phone contacts and choose a friend. Send them a small package with some of their favorite junk food and see what happens. This one might also run you over five bucks for shipping, but it’s the thought that counts!

What else can you do for $5? Comment with your ideas! Post your loyalty card number with your idea and on 10/22, we’ll pick 5 random comments to win a free roll!
